Overview

Stop the Goats Comedy Debate was an event poster and flyer design project created for MDA as part of Queensland Cultural Diversity Week 2014. Held at Brisbane Powerhouse on Friday 5 September 2014, the event used comedy and debate to explore cultural diversity, social issues and community conversation in an accessible and entertaining format.

LovelyPixel designed the event poster and promotional flyer — a bold visual identity that could quickly capture attention, communicate the free event details and reflect the playful but provocative tone of a comedy debate.

The brief and the challenge

The design had to promote a community event with a deliberately unusual title — Stop the Goats! — and feel funny, energetic and slightly disruptive while still remaining professional enough for a public cultural event connected to MDA, Brisbane Powerhouse and Queensland Cultural Diversity Week. The artwork also had to work across printed flyers, wall posters, venue promotion and public event marketing.

The approach

The final design used a strong blue, red and yellow colour palette with a textured paper background and a hand-drawn goat illustration as the central visual device. The creative direction was intentionally bold and theatrical — the goat illustration gave the design instant character, while the rough typography and high-contrast colour treatment helped the poster feel lively, humorous and event-driven.

  • Event poster design — print-ready with strong visual hierarchy
  • Promotional flyer adapted from the poster artwork
  • Hand-drawn goat illustration as the central visual device
  • Vivid three-colour palette and textured paper background
  • Clear event details (date, time, venue, free-entry message)

Personality is the brief

For an event poster, personality is most of the job. Get the tone wrong and even a free, public event feels unwelcoming. The Stop the Goats artwork leaned into the absurdity of the event title — making the comedy obvious before anyone has read a word of copy. That same instinct for matching tone to audience is what we bring to print design Brisbane and graphic design & print.

Outcome

The finished poster and flyer gave Stop the Goats Comedy Debate a distinctive and memorable visual identity — clearly communicating the event name, date, time, venue and free-entry message while giving the campaign a strong sense of personality.
