MDA 2015 Multicultural Calendar — desk calendar design & illustration
A bright, family-friendly desk calendar designed and illustrated for MDA / Multicultural Development Australia in 2015 — celebrating cultural diversity, inclusion and important multicultural dates throughout the year. The project combined illustration, monthly calendar layout, print preparation and print coordination.
Overview
The 2015 MDA Multicultural Calendar was a print design and illustration project created to celebrate cultural diversity, inclusion and important multicultural dates throughout the year. It was designed as a bright, family-friendly desk calendar — a practical working calendar with a playful visual style, clear monthly grid and culturally significant dates highlighted across each month.
LovelyPixel was responsible for the illustration, graphic design, layout preparation and print coordination — the full creative and production journey from concept through to a finished printed calendar ready for office, community and client-facing use.
The brief and the challenge
The calendar had to be a working tool first and a community piece second. It had to be inclusive and visually warm without becoming a generic stock-illustration calendar, and it had to highlight multicultural dates without flattening them into a checklist. Twelve months means twelve separate compositions that all have to feel like the same publication.
The approach
The design used a colourful, optimistic and inclusive visual language. Each month featured a strong background colour, simple calendar grid, multicultural event dates and friendly character illustrations supporting the diversity and community theme. The character work was the connective tissue — different scenes per month, same illustration style.
- Custom illustration system — twelve monthly compositions
- Calendar grid, layout and typography tuned for everyday readability
- Multicultural event dates highlighted clearly across each month
- Print-ready artwork with proper bleed, marks and colour separation
- Print production coordination — from PDF supply through to finished delivery

Illustration + production in one project
This is a good example of work that needs both creative range and production discipline — you can't illustrate twelve months of character scenes and then hand a printer a file that won't print. The illustration system and print preparation were built together so the final calendar shipped on time, on spec, and looking the way it did on screen.
That production discipline applies equally to commercial print collateral — see catalogue design Australia and graphic design & print.
Outcome
The finished calendar gave MDA a practical printed communication piece that celebrated multicultural awareness in a warm and approachable way — suitable for offices, community spaces, client-facing environments and internal use.
